The move by the DNC to block the public viewing of its internal autopsy report concerning the last presidential race appears stunning but entirely predictable. Opposed to unpleasant candor, the Democrats' governing body operates closer to a publicity machine than an electoral entity devoted to building local power capable of prevailing at the polls.

A Climate That Avoids Dissent

Hesitant to depart from the prevailing attitude of conformity, the DNC has stayed under that legacy all through 2025. Releasing such a report could have demonstrated that the leadership are interested to foster public discourse about the strategic failures that enabled the former president to return to the White House. However, the committee is acting as if there is little to glean from the electoral catastrophe of 2024.

A History Shunning Scrutiny

The decision to withhold is consistent with a pattern of evading difficult realities. It recalls a dynamic in which virtually every elected Democrat in Congress went along with an incumbent's decision for running for re-election right up until a catastrophic campaign event forced a reversal.

At the same time, a significant majority within the party's base were continually telling researchers that they did not want the incumbent to run again.
