Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,โ€ a disaster-mitigation officer stated. โ€œA father also called in panic, reporting his homeโ€™s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.โ€

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the stormโ€™s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
