Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
