Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such treatments should be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regainโ€”around 0.1 kg a monthโ€”after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
